Description

Vehicle Dynamics and Control Lab (VDC Lab) at KAIST GSGT focuses on research topics in the ecofriendly and intelligent ground vehicle technologies. Research topics in the eco-friendly propulsion systems area include 1) optimal design and control of novel hybrid electric vehicle powertrains via dynamic modeling
and optimal control theories, 2) development of estimation and management algorithms for lithium batteries, and 3) optimal design and control of electric machines for electric & hybrid vehicles. Another major research area at the VDC Lab is the intelligent vehicular technology such as autonomous driving system. We seek to develop an absolutely reliable and safe obstacle avoidance algorithm that allows autonomous vehicles to navigate through the traffic flow while avoiding moving obstacles. In addition, we are also investigating the design and control problems of waste heat recovery systems in order to extract useful energy from the exhaust gas of internal combustion engines. Our research areas are described as below.

1. Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs)
HEV Configuration & Design
HEV Energy Management
– Motor Design & Control
– Flywheel Hybrid Vehicles

2. Vehicle Dynamics and Control
– Autonomous Driving System
– Intelligent Vehicles & Transportation
– Active Suspensions
– Magnetic Levitation Train Control & Design

3. Battery Design & Control
– Battery Modeling
– Model Parameter Estimation
SOC & SOH Predictions
– Temperature Management
– Cell Balancing

4. Thermodynamics Cycle & Control
– Organic Rankine Cycle (Waste Heat Recovery System)
– Supercritical CO2 Cycle
– Vapor Compression Cycles
