▪ Research contents

► Diesel engine

HCCI (Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition) and pPCCI (partially Premixed Charge Compression Ignition)
– An advanced combustion technology to reduce PM (Particulate Matters) and NOx (Nitrogen Oxides) simultaneously with fully/partially premixed combustion
– Advantages : Low fuel consumption, low NOx and PM emissions
– Disadvantages : Narrow operating ranges, High CO and HC emissions

LTC (Low Temperature Combustion)
– Reducing NOx emission by maintaining combustion temperature below 1800 K with EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) and moderately early injection timing
– Advantages : Low NOx emission
– Disadvantages : High PM, CO and HC emissions

▫ Engine simulation with STAR-CD (CD-adapco)
– Simulating in-cylinder mixture formation and combustion with STAR-CD

► Gasoline engine
GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection)
– Direct injection of gasoline into the engine cylinder instead of port injection of fuel and ignition by spark plug
– Wall-guided / Spray-guided system
– Advantages : High volumetric efficiency, low fuel consumption
– Disadvantages : combustion instability, knocking

TGDI (Turbocharged Gasoline Direct Injection)
GDI engine with a turbocharger
– Turbocharger turbine wheel (Inconel and TiAI)

► Fuel spray and diagnostics
ECN chamber
ECN (Engine Combustion Network) : International collaboration among experimental and computational researchers in engine combustion (http://www.sandia.gov/ecn/)

Prerequisites
- Language : English or Korean
- Lab experience : working experiences with co-workers to do anything
- Passion : Passion to understand Korean culture and make friends
- Interest : Interest in automotive engine (diesel or gasoline)
- Computing tools : basic skill to run MATLAB, and Origin. (preferred but not required : advanced skill
to run STAR-CD, OpenFOAM, or C++ language)
